Who Else Hates Daylight Savings Time?

Seriously - can someone tell me why we continue to inflict this pain and suffering on our country year after year?  And if you have young children, you REALLY know what I'm talking about, don't you?  Trying to drag your 7yo daughter out of bed at 6:30am every day for school is hard enough, but now you have to do it when their bodies think it's only 5:30am.  I found this meme in my Google+ Stream, and as a Princess Bride fan, thought it absolutely perfectly appropriate!

Feb. 2014 Snow Closings Again

Yes indeed, our Charlotte family dentist office is closed again due to snow on Wednesday, Feb. 12th and will probably be closed for the remainder of the week (Feb. 13th and 14th).  We do apologize for the inconvenience, but seeing as it really isn’t very safe to be driving, and the weather forecast says this storm won’t quit until sometime on Thursday, so we have to be safe. As the police are recommending, PLEASE stay off the roads unless it is a genuine emergency.  I had to go out this morning, before it really got bad, and even then it was already getting slick.  Here’s a shot of Matthews-Pineville Rd./NC Highway 51 near Calvary Church to give you an idea of how the roads looked around noon today: […]

Office Closure for Snow

Well, thanks to the icy road conditions this morning here in Charlotte, our office will be closed for at least the morning of Wednesday, January 29th.  We may open this afternoon if it's safe for our employees and us to drive in, but we will be updating our website, Facebook, and G00gle+ pages as we make those decisions.  We do apologize for any inconvenience, and we'll be in touch as soon as we're able to reach everyone to reschedule.  Have fun with the little snow that we got, and be safe if you do have to drive today.  It seems the main roads are fairly clear, but neighborhoods and secondary roads could well have icy patches.

Stay Tuned for Weather Updates This Week!

If you've been following the weather over the last couple days here in the Charlotte area, you know that the middle of the week is looking pretty grim.  With rain predicted on Monday, Jan. 6th, 2014, and then temperatures dropping into the single digits on Monday night heading into Tuesday morning, it's going to be ugly. Check out this Google+  post by Brad Panovich, the weather forecaster for NBC Charlotte affiliate WCNC-TV: Brad Panovich2 hours ago Check out the difference between Monday morning 7:00 am and Tuesday morning! Yikes! #ncwx   #scwx   #arcticblast 9    2 Powered by socialditto We'll be doing our best to keep everyone up-to-date on whether the office will be open or closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, depending on how long this cold spell lasts and how well the city is able to respond. More than anything, we strongly encourage everyone to be safe and sensible - unless you have chains for your tires, NO ONE should be out driving on real ice.  Having grown up in Wilminton, Delaware, I learned to drive in bad weather, and if there's one thing that's clear - ice is just too dangerous to drive on except for emergency situations. Please check back here for updates as necessary.  And BE SAFE! Here's another (potentially very useful since we don't get super-cold weather like this very often) post by Brad about Wind Chill Factor and How Long it Takes to Get Frostbite: Brad Panovich11 hours ago Get to know these numbers and the time it takes to get frostbite. Be safe & stay warm! #coldOMG 12    2 Powered by socialditto

Dental Myth: Knee on the Chest to Pull a Tooth?

In all my years of being a dentist in Charlotte, NC, I’ve heard a lot of interesting stories from patients about bad experiences.  No doubt, the large majority of them are true, but there are a few dental myths out there that always give us in the profession a good chuckle.  One of my personal favorites is this one. Dentists NEVER Put Their Knee On Your Chest Dentists have a bad reputation but most really don’t want to hurt anyone. As is portrayed by Steve Martin in The Little Shop of Horrors, and as seen in this photo I took of a ceramic piece in Italy many years ago, dentists really have a bad reputation.  From talking with many of my colleagues, though, I promise that most of us can’t stand hurting anyone and go out of our way to make sure you’re ok. Dr. Payet Hobnobs with Dental Elites

As part of my commitment to the highest-quality Continuing Education, I do take a lot of advanced CE courses.  Because I'm fairly picky about the courses I choose, the courses I attend also are often the same ones that the most well-known names in dentistry attend.  It's a lot of fun, and I'm fortunate to count a number of world-renowned dental lecturers as both friends and mentors.  However, except at big dental conventions, it's not often that you get a whole bunch of world leaders in the dental field together in one place, but that's just what happened to me this weekend! Combined Powerprox Six Month Braces and Inman Aligner Course The weekend of Feb. 7-9, in Santa Ana, CA, I attended a 2-day refresher course on Powerprox Six Month Braces and a 1-day Certification course for the Inman Aligner.  Getting the year started off with 22 hours of orthodontic continuing education seemed like a good idea, but I had no idea just HOW good an idea it would be!  In the picture below, you can see me with the following world-renowned lecturers and authors (from left to right): Dr. Tif Qureshi - immediate past President of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and Director of the Inman Aligner Training Institute, author of many articles, opinion leader in Europe on numerous issues. Dr. Pascal Magne - professor at the University of Southern California Dental School and, together with his lab technician brother Michel, author of some of THE definitive textbooks on the porcelains we use today, as well as on conservative dentistry; member of one of the most exclusive and advanced dental study clubs in the world. Me :-) (OK, I'm kind of well-known in [...]

2012 – Exciting Changes Ahead!

As our Charlotte NC dental office closed out 2011 and opens for 2012, there are some exciting changes and additions ahead, which we hope will lead to more comfortable, faster, longer-lasting, more esthetic, and even more successful outcomes for our patients of all ages.  So here's a preview of the 2 biggest changes/additions: Dental Implants Of all the plans for the year, I am most excited about starting a 9-month long dental implant continuum of really intense training on all aspects of planning, placing, and restoring dental implants.  From March through November, it's 216 Hours of in-depth training by world-renowned specialists.  Once completed, I will be fully trained and qualified to do the following procedures: Single-tooth replacement with an implant and crown Replace 3-14 missing teeth with a dental implant-supported bridge Rebuild bone in areas that need it before an implant can be placed Do additional gum grafting in areas where needed for implant success Place multiple implants to support a "snap-in" denture Use the most modern 3-D x-rays to plan and finish the most complex cases Better One-Day Porcelain Dental Crowns and Onlays Shortly before Christmas, we received the newest and biggest software update EVER for our CEREC CAD/CAM system, which we absolutely love already. Totally redesigned to make it easier and faster to get natural-looking, all-porcelain dental crowns in just one day, we can now do multiple crowns and onlays all at once, even in different parts of the mouth. If all goes really well (fingers crossed!), will be adding a new 3D Cone Beam X-ray machine that integrates perfectly with CEREC.  This combination will let us plan dental implants and crowns or bridges all together!

A New Way to Stay in Touch: Google+

Have you jumped into Google+, the newest and fastest-growing social media platform online, yet? If not, it's remarkably easy to get started, and after using it on a personal level for the last 2 months or so, I must say, it's turning into a wonderful way to stay in touch with people. There are some very noticeable differences when compared to Facebook, and FB is still the dominant player, no doubt about that, but I like it! Find this Charlotte NC Dentist All Over! And as of Monday November 7th, 2011, now we have a Google+ Business Page, too! As a bit of a techie and Web geek, I was fortunate to get an early opportunity to create one, and I'd like to share it with you: Smiles by Payet Dentistry on G+.  Now, it's still pretty basic, as I'm learning how they work, and Google is still adding features on a regular basis. Of course, there are a gazillion different websites out there, and it's basically impossible to maintain a presence on all of them, but there are certainly a few that we use, if you'd like to keep in touch with us beyond our Monthly Newsletters or emails.  Check us out!
