Do You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Taken Out?

Given all the other nonsense floating around social media, I shouldn't be surprised at seeing this old item resurrected and circulating about yet another way that dentists allegedly rip off the public: wisdom teeth extractions.  So let's talk about the following questions, then cover the answers.  Unlike most of my articles, this is going to be a lot of LISTS!  I've also included a sampling of x-rays taken in my office within just the last few weeks as examples of many of these situations.  At the end of the article, I'll also provide a short debunking of the nonsense in this article that occasionally floats around FB and Twitter: Wisdom Teeth Dental Scam & Why You Need Your Wisdom Teeth (hint: you really don't). Why Should Wisdom Teeth be Removed? Even before getting to the reasons why wisdom teeth need to be removed sometimes, let's talk about how dentists and oral surgeons generally diagnose and describe wisdom teeth, aka 3rd molars.  The most common x-ray used to see wisdom teeth and figure out if they need to be extracted or not is called a panoramic x-ray.  It looks like this: The most obvious reason that wisdom teeth should be removed is if they have a big cavity and would be difficult to fix because of how far back in the mouth they are.  If you can't keep them clean, you'll just get cavities again.  Save yourself the hassle now and get rid of them. If they can only erupt partially and are still partially covered by gum tissue, that's a great place for bacteria to grow since it's very difficult to clean them.  If the bacteria grow out of control, the infection is called pericoronitis (infection of the gum [...]

Dental Myth: Knee on the Chest to Pull a Tooth?

In all my years of being a dentist in Charlotte, NC, I’ve heard a lot of interesting stories from patients about bad experiences.  No doubt, the large majority of them are true, but there are a few dental myths out there that always give us in the profession a good chuckle.  One of my personal favorites is this one. Dentists NEVER Put Their Knee On Your Chest Dentists have a bad reputation but most really don’t want to hurt anyone. As is portrayed by Steve Martin in The Little Shop of Horrors, and as seen in this photo I took of a ceramic piece in Italy many years ago, dentists really have a bad reputation.  From talking with many of my colleagues, though, I promise that most of us can’t stand hurting anyone and go out of our way to make sure you’re ok. Doc, My Toe Fell Off – But I Didn’t Do Anything Since It Didn’t Hurt

I'd like to start off this post with a short story written by my friend and colleague, Dr. Alan Mead, on his blog Mead Family Dental. I have a friend who told me about something that happened to him recently. “So I was jogging the other day and one of my toes fell off. It was weird. I wasn’t even jogging on gravel or anything. Smooth blacktop. Anyway, I’m jogging along and then BOOM, my big toe falls off.” I said, “my gosh, that’s terrible! What did the doctor say?” “I didn’t go to the doctor. It didn’t really hurt much. Only when I walked on it just the right way. I just avoided walking on it.” At this point, you're probably thinking, "No way would I ever do that!  If my toe fell off, I'd be at the doctor's office so fast, your head would spin!"  But you know what?  We dentists hear this story almost every day, except substitute the word "tooth" for "toe," and we hear, "Well, since it didn't hurt, I didn't do anything about it." Just Because a Broken Tooth Doesn't Hurt, Doesn't Mean It's Not a Problem I'll be honest - even after almost 15 years of doing dentistry, I don't "get" why people think broken teeth aren't anything to worry about.  Maybe someone can explain it to me, but I just don't get it!  If any other part of your body broke in half, even if it didn't hurt right away, you'd be worried, wouldn't you?  Imagine your arm suddenly breaking and hanging there, even if it didn't hurt, wouldn't you be worried that something bad could be going on? [...]

A Toothache Can Kill You

But the good news is, a visit to your dentist could literally save your life.  :-D BTW - as much as I like using photos to illustrate a point, no worries here, this post is safe to view at work, at home, around the kids, and will NOT upset your stomach at all.  No gory photos! A Tooth Infection is REALLY Close to Your Brain & Throat As I mentioned on our Facebook Fan Page earlier this week, it isn't often that a general "family" dentist gets the opportunity to save a person's life, but this week that happened here at our south Charlotte family dental office.  A young man came to us through 1-800-DENTIST, and he'd been absolutely miserable for almost a month.  The right side of his face was severely swollen, to the point he couldn't open his right eye, and he had difficulty opening his mouth enough for us even to take a look and identify the problem tooth.  He could barely even talk, and was clearly exhausted from not being able to sleep well for a long time. With a good x-ray and brief exam, the problem tooth was identified as an upper right molar (top right back jaw tooth) with a major cavity.  On the x-ray, it looked like the roots were close to the sinus, which explained why he had some really bad sinus pressure on that side, too.  Literally, the tooth abscess had penetrated his sinus.  And if the infection was into his sinus, that meant it was not all that far from his brain.  As most anyone knows, pretty much ANY infection that reaches the brain will put you in the hospital, and even if you survive, [...]
