Do CEREC Same-Day Crowns Last a Long Time?

When it comes to dental crowns, patients have long loved the convenience of the CEREC CAD/CAM system, but some patients do ask if these crowns are as good as the those made by traditional dental labs. They particularly want to know how long these crowns last, because no one wants to have them redone any sooner than necessary.  With that in mind, I happened to see a patient recently who has in her mouth the longest-lasting CEREC crown that I've ever done: my Mom! Porcelain Dental Crown Materials are the Same in Lab & Office CEREC E.max bridge The simple fact is that both labs and CEREC offices use identical materials when making most porcelain crowns, onlays, and veneers.  For many years, Empress and VITA ceramics were highly used, but today the 2 most common materials are E.max and Zirconia, although there are many others available.  Even when dentists use traditional impression materials today, almost all labs still have scanners to convert the models into digital format to design and mill the crowns, bridges, or onlays.  That's why dentists with CAD/CAM systems and labs use identical materials, because we're using extremely similar methods to make them.  Because manufacturers can provide the same materials in the same sizes and shapes to both labs and dentists, it has helped keep the cost of these new methods steady.  That's why we don't charge a different fee based on doing it with CEREC or sending it to the lab. It's true that most dental offices using CEREC can only make onlays, crowns, and bridges from E.max; the oven necessary to bake and crystallize Zirconia crowns only became broadly and affordably available within the last couple years, but they [...]

How Many Veneers Do You Need?

So you're unhappy with your smile and are thinking about getting some cosmetic dentistry done, but you're not sure how many teeth will be involved or how to plan your budget?  Well, in this article I'll answer many of the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that we hear during Cosmetic Dentistry Consultations, especially because we're seeing a lot more patients interested in Smile Makeovers these days. To get started, take a good look at this old image of Matthew Perry from his early days in Friends to get an idea of what you DON'T want.  :-)  Most likely, many of your questions will be answered simply by looking at it, but we'll cover each question individually. If you'd like to see more examples of the cosmetic dentistry that we do in our Charlotte dental office, you can read and see more here: Cosmetic Dentistry Before-and-After Porcelain Veneers Before-and-After Porcelain Bridges A New Smile with Porcelain Veneers for a Wedding But First - Veneers/Crowns or Braces? Before we start talking about how many porcelain veneers or crowns you need/want, let's talk about when cosmetic dentistry is best and when braces, whether Invisalign, Six Month Braces, or the Inman Aligner, might be a better choice.  In simplest terms, I suggest thinking of it like this: If you like the way your teeth look overall, but they're just crooked in some way, braces are always the way to go.  After all, it's less expensive and non-invasive.  But if your teeth are badly worn, or severely stained, or broken, or will somehow look ugly even if they are straight, then porcelain veneers/crowns may be a better option, because they can make the teeth look beautiful, not just straight. How Many [...]

Digital Dentistry is Awesome!

Truly, the wave of the future in dentistry is DIGITAL, and not just in computers in the rooms.  Digital dentistry is expanding into every aspect of modern dental care, and I love being part of it!  Here’s just one example from this week: Digital Dental Impressions – NO GOO and Much Faster When you need crowns in our Charlotte dental office, most of the time we make them right here during your appointment with the CEREC CAD/CAM system.  However, there are times that we still need to use a lab, and one of the main reasons for this is when we need the strongest possible materials, such as zirconia.  Zirconia is a ceramic material with unbelievable strength and hardness, even when pretty thin (we’re talking 1 millimeter thin). […]

Stunning Cosmetic Dentistry in One Visit

While not an easy job, some days dentistry is one of the most rewarding jobs on the planet, and today was one of them! Cosmetic dentistry can take many forms, but when it involves multiple different procedures and materials, it can be an hugely challenging job to make it all turn out just right.  In our Charlotte dentist office, we use the most modern technology and teamwork and skills to make this happen, and today was a perfect example of how it should all come together for a beautiful smile. A Broken Porcelain Crown and Space Between the 2 Front Teeth When Anya first came to us for a consultation, it seemed fairly routine - she had a 10-year old porcelain crown that had a chipped corner, and she didn't like the gap between her 2 front teeth.  So I recommended some bonding on the left front tooth and having my lab make a new porcelain crown for the right front tooth.  While I love our CEREC Same-Day Crown system, I felt we'd get the best result with a skilled porcelain artist, aka a lab tech.  But as I got up, I noticed she seemed upset, so I asked what was wrong, and she told me of how bad the experience was the first time she got the crown done, and I realized we couldn't do that to her again. The challenge was then - make as perfectly matching a new crown as we could in ONE VISIT, plus close the space between the teeth.  And if there's one thing I like, it's a challenge! Cosmetic Dentistry is about Communication So after plenty of discussion, we decided on the following plan: BOOST! One-Hour Tooth Whitening (completed [...]

2012 – Exciting Changes Ahead!

As our Charlotte NC dental office closed out 2011 and opens for 2012, there are some exciting changes and additions ahead, which we hope will lead to more comfortable, faster, longer-lasting, more esthetic, and even more successful outcomes for our patients of all ages.  So here's a preview of the 2 biggest changes/additions: Dental Implants Of all the plans for the year, I am most excited about starting a 9-month long dental implant continuum of really intense training on all aspects of planning, placing, and restoring dental implants.  From March through November, it's 216 Hours of in-depth training by world-renowned specialists.  Once completed, I will be fully trained and qualified to do the following procedures: Single-tooth replacement with an implant and crown Replace 3-14 missing teeth with a dental implant-supported bridge Rebuild bone in areas that need it before an implant can be placed Do additional gum grafting in areas where needed for implant success Place multiple implants to support a "snap-in" denture Use the most modern 3-D x-rays to plan and finish the most complex cases Better One-Day Porcelain Dental Crowns and Onlays Shortly before Christmas, we received the newest and biggest software update EVER for our CEREC CAD/CAM system, which we absolutely love already. Totally redesigned to make it easier and faster to get natural-looking, all-porcelain dental crowns in just one day, we can now do multiple crowns and onlays all at once, even in different parts of the mouth. If all goes really well (fingers crossed!), will be adding a new 3D Cone Beam X-ray machine that integrates perfectly with CEREC.  This combination will let us plan dental implants and crowns or bridges all together!

Complete Smile Makeover with Porcelain Crowns

A Full-Mouth Smile Reconstruction Quite some time ago, I showed this case as an example of how badly teeth can be damaged by grinding them, whether at night, in the daytime, or both, and why something as simple and inexpensive as a nightguard (my recommendation is a NTI-tss).  It is especially inexpensive in comparison to the cost of rebuilding a smile that is so broken down.  This gentleman came to us in 2008, looking for options to feel good about his smile again for various reasons.  After plenty of discussion, we agreed that the only option that would truly give him the smile that he wanted was a Total Smile Makeover/Reconstruction with porcelain crowns. After showing the Before-After pictures of his smile, I'll discuss some of the issues you need to consider if you are thinking about significant cosmetic dentistry for yourself. Frequently Asked Questions about Smile Reconstruction When rebuilding a smile such as this, it is crucial to establish a proper bite relationship of the top and bottom teeth.  Sometimes this can take a little while to figure out, because - when the teeth are so worn, the patient has long since adapted to a very bad bite relationship.  The muscles have to be relaxed, accurate records taken, and excellent communication is necessary among the patient, the doctor, and the lab, to ensure that the crowns are made to look good, feel good, and last a long time. However, in severe wear cases, we always remind the patient that s/he already did a pretty good job destroying their natural set of teeth, so a nightguard is an absolute requirement as "insurance" to protect their investment, and even then they are more likely to break [...]

Cosmetic Dentistry with Porcelain Veneers

While Six-Month Braces has become increasingly popular with our Charlotte area patients who desire a Smile Makeover, there are times that Porcelain Veneers are a better option, or at least an equally viable option. 6 Reasons to Choose Porcelain Veneers over Six Month Braces I've included a short video of a few Smile Makeovers done in our office over the years to demonstrate what can be accomplished with porcelain veneers.  Should you have any questions or desire a Complimentary Consultation of your own, please call 704-364-7069 or Request an Appointment Online. Comments and Questions are always welcome!

Before & After Pictures of Another One-Visit Porcelain Crown with CEREC

Interestingly, this porcelain crown was done on the same patient as the last gold onlay that I posted.  So why a porcelain crown on this tooth instead of gold?  Simple -- this one is more visible in his smile, and he wasn't interested in having "bling" in his smile.  LOL  Given that strength and durability of his porcelain crown is also very important, as is obvious by his choice of gold for his second molar on the other side, we did use what is currently the strongest porcelain crown available today, whether made by a lab or with our CEREC, and it is called Emax.  This ceramic is incredibly strong, far superior to the old Porcelain-Fused-to-Gold (PFM) crowns that have been used for decades.  And, of course, we did it in a single appointment. Just to review the advantages of CEREC 3D CAD/CAM Porcelain Crowns, and why we're proud to offer them at our Southpark Charlotte NC dental office: Just 1 Appointment No temporary (provisional) crown No worries about the temporary crown falling off Incredibly strong Very natural-looking and blend in beautifully LESS sensitivity afterward because the tooth is immediately bonded and sealed If you need a crown and are looking for the convenience and excellent result we can provide with our CEREC 1-visit crowns, call us or visit our website: 704-364-7069 Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Charlotte NC

A Complete Smile Makeover with Porcelain Crowns for Teeth Damaged by Bulimia

Acid Erosion from Bulimia Damages Teeth There are many reasons patients come to see me for cosmetic dentistry.  One of the most common reasons is because their teeth are badly worn down from grinding, often in combination with acid erosion that has eaten away at the enamel.  Treating these cases can be complex, because if we don't properly diagnose and solve the problem that caused the worn, eroded teeth in the first place, then any cosmetic dentistry is sure to fail very fast. When Jenni (not her real name, as she prefers to stay anonymous) first came to see me through a referral back in 2005 for a Smile Makeover consultation, she admitted that she had suffered from bulimia as a teen, about 20 years prior.  She had recovered from this debilitating disease and had been leading a healthy, normal life for many years, but her teeth had been so eroded that she was extremely self-conscious and embarrassed by her smile. Control the Cause of Erosion, or Your Work Will Fail Since Jenni's original issue had been addressed medically, we were safe moving forward with a greatly decreased risk of acid erosion causing problems again, although bulimics are at a much higher risk of GERD/acid reflux. In cases like this, we use a combination of products to protect the teeth and dental work, because the teeth are still at a greater risk of future decay, due to all the previous damage.  I've discussed many of the products we recommend in my post, There's No Such Thing as Soft Teeth, if this is a concern. Baby Boomers & Dental Care – Don’t wait until after retirement!

With more and more Baby Boomers approaching or entering retirement, an issue often not considered is their dental health. I think it is actually an important topic to discuss, even more so in today's economy. Many Baby Boomers - my parents included - have put retirement on hold, but it's still not all that far away, and with retirement usually comes the loss of dental insurance and the loss of medical/dental Flex plans that can help a lot with covering the cost of dental care. After that, it's all out-of-pocket. Ouch! So we always recommend a thorough re-evaluation of existing dental work for things that may be on the verge of going bad. Such things could be: Old silver fillings with cavities and cracks that could turn into root canals and crowns or extractions The teeth around the old silver fillings may have cracks that could lead to broken teeth Gum (periodontal) disease Ugly old crowns that could be replaced for a nicer smile in the golden years Replacing missing teeth with dental bridges or implants so you can eat the foods you want Etc etc etc...... This gentleman hadn't been to the dentist in a number of years but knew that he was approaching retirement, so he wanted to come in, get a cleaning, and find out if he needed to take care of anything while he still had dental insurance. Turns out that many of his 30+ year old silver fillings were in really bad condition, with pieces chipping off, cavities forming around the edges, teeth cracking, and gum disease to boot. While the total treatment that he needed involved some gum surgery (not needed for everyone, obviously), the primary issue that we [...]
