Updates on Invisalign

ALIGN Technology, the company that makes Invisalign orthodontic aligners, has not yet made any indication that they will be reversing their decision on June 1st to require dentists and orthodontists to do a minimum of 10 cases each year and complete 10 hours of their Continuing Education courses each year.  The backlash among dentists and orthodontists, however, continues to get stronger, as this is a fairly blatant move by a for-profit corporation to intrude on a doctor's autonomy and decision-making rights as to which cases are appropriate for Invisalign and which are not.  Several professional organizations, including the Academy of General Dentistry and the New York State Dental Association, are already responding with letters to ALIGN Technology's Board of Directors and President, stating that there is simply no evidence that the so-called "proficiency requirements" have any basis in science, and unless they can come up with something to substantiate the claims the company is making, they should immediately withdraw the requirements.  If ALIGN Technology continues on this course, patients should fully expect to see an enormous drop in the availability of Invisalign as more and more dentists and orthodontists simply drop their service. The good news is that there are alternatives to Invisalign, and they work as well or better, AND they're even less expensive! [...]

Bonding just 1 front tooth one REALLY satisfied patient

You know, dentistry can be a very challenging job: working on very small teeth, teeth, tongue, cheeks, saliva all trying to get in the way, patient fears.....some days dentistry wears you out. But other days like today?  Wow, I had a patient come in this morning for whom we'd done a big tooth-colored filling (bonding) on her upper left eye-tooth a couple weeks ago.  It had been really obvious in her smile, a big brown hole in the tooth that she had to hide every time she smiled, and trust me.......this is a lady who likes to smile a LOT.  When we finished the bonding that day, she almost burst into tears of happiness, because she could smile with confidence again. Honestly, this testimonial is the reason cosmetic dentistry is so big, whether it's porcelain veneers, bonding, Six-Month Smiles (getting your teeth straight in only 6 months really is possible!), teeth whitening......read for yourself why I love what I do, even with all the challenges: "After 17 years of being terrified of the dentist and avoiding simple preventive office visits, my smile had become my enemy.  For years now, I have covered my mouth when I laughed and smiled, even avoided social settings. Dr. Payet and his staff have been wonderful to me and have made me feel very comfortable while in the office. in just two visits they have given me so much to smile about!  I almost bust into tears of joy when I smile in front of a mirror, and find myself in front of many mirrors lately!  Dr. Payet has restored my confidence and for that I am truly grateful to him and everyone in his office!  Thank you so much! New page on www.SmilesbyPayet.com – Dental photography

In our office, as I've demonstrated many times before, we use the power of digital dental photography to improve patient understanding of what's going on in their mouths.  Truly, as the 2 sayings go: Seeing is Believing, and A Picture is worth 1000 words. I've added a new page to our website along these lines, and I hope you'll enjoy it:  Smiles by Payet Dental Photography It's still a work in progress, so please bear with me - more to come!

GO HEELS!!!!!

This has absolutely nothing to do with dentistry, except for the fact that I did attend the University of North Carolina for both my undergrad and dental school studies, but... The University of North Carolina Men's Basketball Team is the 2009 NCAA Champions!!!!

A neat little benchmark

Can't say it's terribly important in the greater scheme of things, but it's kind of neat watching the increase in views on the Smiles by Payet Dentistry Blog here.  Just started at the end of November, and I really still have a lot to learn about SEO and how that works with blogs and websites, etc., but in the month of March we passed 350 views, which was very close to DOUBLE our previous high, and we'll pass 1,000 views sometime in the next 2 weeks or so. Just thought I'd share that tidbit.  :-)

Dental Insurance not covering cleanings 100%?

Dental Insurance is Changing When looking for a Charlotte dentist, patients often want to get the most from their employer's dental benefits.  For ages, most dental insurance plans have included 2 cleanings, 2 exams, and 1 sets of x-rays every year.  Of course, this is usually subtracted from your annual maximum, not something separate. However, I have to warn you - this is not always true any longer! With employers looking to cut costs, and insurance companies looking to find ways to keep from paying out as much, in just the last several months, we have run across this situation SEVERAL times, and it's getting more common.  So just what is happening with your dental insurance coverage? 1) Just last week, we found 1 insurance company that now only pays 75% of the exam and cleaning, and that's even if you see a dentist who is in-network. It seems crazy, but true.  Even if you go to a dentist who is in-network for this plan, they don't cover 100% of the exam and cleaning.  Surprisingly, they DO still cover 100% of x-rays, but I expect to see that change soon, too. 2) In the last 3 weeks have found 2 insurance companies that now make you pay your deductible (usually $25-50/year for an individual) on your exam, x-rays, and cleaning! This means that - EVEN IF your plan covers 100% of the cleaning, exam, and x-rays, they still make you pay your deductible on that.  This is fairly new; it used to be that deductibles would only apply to things like fillings, crowns, non-surgical gum therapy for gum disease, root canals, etc.  Before this, if all you needed was the exams, x-rays, and cleanings every [...]
