Just How Bad are Sodas for Your Teeth?

MOST people know by know that sodas are bad for you. Not as many people know that diet sodas are just about as bad as regular sodas, simply because of how acidic sodas are. Yes - sugar is bad for your teeth, but acidity is even worse, and when you combine sugar and acidity, you're talking Tooth Decay Bonanza!  I just recently came across this really awesome infographic that spells out for you just how bad it is.  Check it out, and at the end, I've included several links to previous articles about how to prevent cavities, repair early cavities, and some suggestions on recommended products to keep your mouth healthy.   For more information on "soft teeth," how to prevent cavities, choosing dental products, and more, check out the following articles: There's No Such Thing as Soft Teeth How to Reduce or Prevent Cavities Think the Dentist is Expensive?  Then Brush and Floss! Hooray, I’m Not Dying As Fast

Yup, another attention-grabbing headline for ya.  :-)  But I'm serious, and here's why....my cholesterol is down! A little over a year ago, I wrote an article about how healthy teeth and healthy living go hand in hand.  I had just learned that my cholesterol was alarmingly high - 242.  Given that I was only 41 years old and thought that I was pretty healthy, it was definitely alarming.  Since then, I've made big changes to my lifestyle through an improved diet, increased exercise, meditation, and more frequent time off to recharge.  At my recent 1- year follow-up, I was rewarded with good news: while my total cholesterol only dropped to 233,  my good cholesterol went up, and the bad cholesterol went down, so the overall ratio showed a solid improvement. Conventional and Holistic Medicine & Dentistry Agree - Eat Well, Sleep Well, Exercise, Good Hygiene If you've been reading my blog for the last year (or following us on Facebook or Google+), you'll have seen a trend in the subjects: that I am really NOT a fan of so-called holistic/alternative medicine or pseudoscience.  For reference, here are a few of the articles: Holistic, Alternative Medicine is Usually Wrong Can Cavities be Cured? Do Silver Fillings Poison You?  Heck No, Dr. Oz! Dr. Oz is Called before Congress for his Quackery (on Google+) Nor do I have a problem with GMO food; I don't believe in chemtrails; I don't believe in miracle cures for cancer that only some people know; I think the whole "Big Pharma" and "Big Medicine" conspiracies are full of crap.  Now that I've surely pissed off a lot of people and will get a lot of angry comments, let's get to the one [...]

Kids Tooth Tip #2: Electric Toothbrushes Rule

So last week I posted the first of my Kids Tooth Tips, and Tip #1 was this: Help Your Child Brush His/Her Teeth Until Age 10.  The simple reason for this was that kids usually lack the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to do a good job all on their own.  We all wish they could do it on their own, but for all intents and purposes, they just can’t.  It’s not their fault – they just haven’t developed enough yet.  And yes, I certainly found this with my own daughter, and heck, if a dentist’s own daughter has trouble…..ANYONE’S kid can have trouble alone. Electric Toothbrushes are DA BOMB for All Ages While this article is mostly intended for kids, I’m a huge believer in electric toothbrushes for everyone.   And while most electric toothbrushes work fine, my personal recommendation is the Sonicare Electric Toothbrush, both for kids and adults.  Here’s why: […]

Easy Tips to Clean Your Kids Teeth

So not too long ago, I posed this question on Google+ to a number of "Mommy Bloggers." What Do Mom's Want to Know About Dentistry? One of the questions was from Jennifer Daugherty, who asked: Is it a big deal if a child uses an adult toothbrush? Two more questions were asked by Sherrill Duce: Is there a difference between regular toothpaste and the bubblegum flavored kids toothpaste? At what age should you start them flossing? So I put my writing cap on and decided that I should start a series of posts about a really important, but apparently not well-addressed, set of questions: How To Take Care of Your Kids' Teeth And with no further ado, I introduce to you my new series: Kids' Tooth Tips.  In this series (no idea how many there will be - the more questions I get asked, the more I'll do!), I'll pick one important tip you can use to keep your children cavity-free.  This may take the form of any one of the following: Myth-busting Recommended products Recommended techniques Video demonstrations with my 7 year old daughter, Elizabeth (shown here with me) Important questions to ask your dentist Anything else I can think of  :-) Kid's Tooth Tip #1: Help Your Child Until Age 10 This is one that actually surprised me when I learned in last year - when my own daughter was nearly 7.  My wife and I had been letting Elizabeth pretty much do her own brushing for a least a year, mostly focusing on making sure that she was brushing long enough to do a good job.  However, in discussions with a pediatric dentist colleague, I learned this was NOT [...]

How to Reduce or Prevent Tooth Cavities

As a follow-up to my recent blockbuster article (viewed nearly 3,000 times just in Feb. 2014 in 50 countries around the world - WOW!), Can Cavities be Cured, I'd like to talk about how you can decrease your risk of getting cavities, since I think we can all agree (holistics and conventional medicine followers alike) that prevention is by far the best.  The thing is, there are so many choices, how in the world do you choose!? What Toothbrush Should You Use? Back in dental school (UNC Chapel Hill School of Dentistry '98), I still remember one of our professors giving us the following information: A properly used manual toothbrush can do as good a job as an electric toothbrush; the problem is that most people don't use a manual toothbrush properly. In all of my almost 16 years of experience in full-time, private practice dentistry, I have found this statement to be perfectly on target.  The simple fact is, no matter how many times a dentist or hygienist reviews the proper way to brush, most people don't do it that way.  Why?  One simple reason - although this is my opinion only, not something that's been studied AFAIK - when you're in a rush to brush in the morning or before bed, you grab the brush and start scrubbing away and get the teeth done as fast as possible before running out the door or going to bed.  Am I right?  Of course I am!  So what do I recommend? Why do I recommend the Sonicare Electric Toothbrush?  Let's count the reasons: An automatic timer with a beep every 30 seconds so you brush for 2 minutes A pressure sensor to automatically [...]

Can Cavities Be Cured?

I’ve seen a lot of posts and articles recently about whether or not dental cavities can be “cured,” with various holistic dentistry advocates pushing alleged cures such as colloidal silver, coconut oil, and some other stuff.  We don’t see many people in our practice with these questions, but since it’s out there, I think it wise to address the issue head-on.  Bear in mind – this article will pull no punches and might seem a bit offensive.  My apologies in advance, but I am definitely getting on my soapbox here.  🙂 Update: I’ve written a new article that discusses the research that is asked about in the comments.  There are ongoing studies into how to stimulate tooth growth with lasers, create gels of minerals and enzymes that could build new enamel, and more.  As of 2016, however, any such research is at least a decade away from being available.  You can read more here: Why Dentists Can’t Cure Cavities or Regrow Enamel. Holistic Dentistry Is a Scam and Hoax No sense in beating around the bush, eh?  I’ll just get straight to the point and give you what I honestly believe, and tell you that there is virtually nothing espoused by “holistic” dentists that has ever been proven to be worth more than the paper it was printed on or the Internet space it took up.  This holds true for the idea of “curing tooth decay,” too, as espoused on such junk “science” sites as NaturalNews.com or WellnessMama.com.  Plain and simple, it’s true that Holistic, Alternative Medicine is Usually Wrong. But getting specifically to the question about “curing” dental cavities, this post was largely inspired by this wonderfully thorough article that debunks the idea of [...]

OMG – I’m Dying!

OK, no worries everyone – the title was just to grab your attention, but there is also some truth to it, isn’t there?  From the moment we’re born until the moment we die, we are both growing and dying all the time. Bear with me as I wax a little philosophical in today’s blog post, which is more focused on TOTAL health, rather than just oral and dental health.  I recently got some bad news from my doctor about cholesterol, so I’ve been thinking about how I take care of myself overall.  I’ll pull in some dental issues, too, though….after all, this is a dental blog! How Well Do You Care For Yourself? And when I say, “…take care of yourself,” I really mean mentally, physically, and even spiritually.  […]

The Cavity in the Mirror May Be Bigger Than It Appears

You know that little message in the passenger-side mirror on all cars?  The one that says, “Objects in the Mirror May Be Closer Than They Appear?”  It’s basically saying – objects in the mirror ARE closer than they appear, so BE CAREFUL!  Well, it would be really nice if patients could understand that when dentists say, “There’s a cavity in your tooth,” they’re really saying, “That cavity in your tooth may not look big, but I promise – it’s bigger than it looks!” […]

How Do I Know You Grind Your Teeth, Even if You Don’t Believe Me?

I don’t know why exactly, but patients at my Charlotte dentist office (and all around the country, according to my colleagues) seem to have a problem believing me when I say, “Wow – you grind your teeth really badly.”  In fact, the most common response is, “No I don’t!” said with a passion that makes it seem I’m accusing them of killing baby animals.  Seriously – and there are a few reasons why people think they’re right and I’m wrong……..even though I’m the doctor.  Weird, huh? […]

Think the Dentist is Expensive? Then Brush and Floss!

Do you have a lot of dental problems that seem really expensive to fix, whether it’s dental fillings, crowns, root canals, or dental implants?  Do you feel like the dentist is just out for your money when you’re told you have cavities or gum disease, but nothing is hurting, so you think they’re just making it up?  Do you write nasty comments (or even just agree with them) about greedy dentists on the news stories about them because you need a lot of work and can’t pay for it?   If you’re one of these people, I have a tough love message for you: DON’T BLAME THE DENTIST – INSTEAD, TAKE A HARD LOOK IN THE MIRROR!  Put another way: I’m sick and tired of being the “bad guy,” when all I’m trying to do is help you get better.  It’s not my fault you have cavities or gum disease! […]
